Sauvignon Blanc

Introducing the iconic wine that helped put New Zealand on the international wine map, Sauvignon Blanc!

Cloudy Bay’s first winemaker, Kevin Judd, who now owns Greywacke Vineyards, is arguably one of the key individuals who helped make this happen. Sauvignon Blanc is an aromatic white grape that is known to originate from the Loire Valley in central France, however, it can now be found all over the world.

Marlborough is the Sauvignon Blanc capital of New Zealand. This region, located in the top of the South Island, produces the largest amount of Sauvignon Blanc in the country, this is greatly due to the dry seasons and long hours of sunshine. In fact, this popular wine variety makes up the majority of the wine produced in New Zealand (approximately 70%).

Sauvignon Blanc is a dry white wine and will exhibit a light to medium body along with a high acidity. Some general aromas and flavours include grassy note, herbaceous and fruity, which will vary depending on their climate.

Here in New Zealand, there are seven regions that produce Sauvignon Blanc. The warmer climate of our North Island typically produces more tropical fruit styles similar to stone fruit or nectarine flavours. Whereas Sauvignon Blanc grown in the South Island regions of Marlborough, Waipara and Central Otago show more crisper, acidic and tangy characteristics.

Even within these southern regions the wines can be distinguished with different flavours, for instance, Sauvignon Blanc produced in the Marlborough region from vineyards such as Cloudy Bay, Saint Clair and Dog Point usually demonstrate more intense aromas of passionfruit, gooseberries and lemongrass. In comparison, vineyards further south in the Central Otago region from wineries such as Chard Farm, Peregrine and Gibbston Valley show more citrus and passionfruit characteristics along with a drier finish.

Many of New Zealand’s finest Sauvignon Blanc’s are not widely exported, with high quality boutique wineries such as Eaton and Clos Marguerite having such small production to meet demand. wineNZ.com enables you to buy New Zealand’s best Sauvignon Blanc with delivery to over 40 countries worldwide
