Quartz Reef was founded in 1996 by Rudi Bauer, Trevor Scott and John Perriam on a unique Pioneer site in Bendigo, the beautiful and warmest sub region of Central Otago. Rudi Bauer, the winemaker, makes wines of outstanding flavour and intensity due to higher plant density and less yield per vine. There are currently 30 hectares under cultivation: The principal Bendigo Estate Vineyard site of 15 hectare north facing slope comprising arid clay, fine gravel and quartz soils where comes from the outstanding Royal Block “OTTO” Pinot Noir 2017, and another north sloping 15-hectare vineyard at Loop Rd .
Quartz Reef produces mainly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for still and sparkling wine made in Méthode Traditionnelle. Pinot Gris is also grown for the production of a rich textured dry style as is Gruner Veltliner, another very interesting white grape variety for producing crispy, refreshing wines.
Rudi Bauer has shown all his talent since he started at Quartz Reef and has been awarded many times for his wines including one of the best sparkling wines of New Zealand, the delicious Quartz Reef Blanc de Blanc Methode Traditionnelle 2015.
