Pyramid Valley
It would be fair to say that Pyramid Valley Wines are one of the most exciting and innovative producers to look out for in this region. They have an extensive collection of different wines to choose from, something is sure to please everyone.
Pyramid Valley Wines are based in Canterbury, but they also have vines in Central Otago. In 2018, they bought Lowburn Ferry Vineyards; Manata Estate. The future of this vineyard is in good hands! Here’s a question for you...is the best Pinot Noir in the South Island of New Zealand made in Canterbury or Waipara? Well now, Pyramid Valley can cover their bases when it comes to making cool climate whites and reds!
Pyramid Valley was founded by Mike and Claudia Weersing; they had spent many years searching the world for the perfect place to grow grapes, and they finally settled near Waikari in Canterbury. Mike and Claudia crafted wines following a strict biodynamic regime. In 2017, contemporary negociants Steve Smith MW and Brian Sheth took over, keen to have a sophisticated alternative brand to go alongside their current ‘Cru’ range of wines, from vineyards in Hawkes Bay and Marlborough.
Their main 80 hectare Waikari estate in North Canterbury is a unique mix of limestone soils, and high altitude slopes, giving wines of perfect balance and structure.
There’s no shortage of interesting wines from Pyramid Valley, like their Marlborough Sauvignon +, which is Sauvignon Blanc with a little addition of Riesling, or their North Canterbury Orange Wine, made with skin-contact Pinot Gris grapes, and tastes a bit like a Negroni. Also, their collection of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines certainly give some Central Otago wines a run for their money!
