Rockburn was started in 1991 by Richard (Dick) Bunton when he established a 3 hectares 'hobby' block vineyard by Lake Hayes near Arrowtown in Central Otago. The venture expanded to include a 9ha vineyard development in Gibbston Valley in 1992. In 1999, Chris James joined Dick, and together they purchased and established a 33ha vineyard block in Parkburn on the shores of Lake Dunstan.
In 2002, the company was rebranded as Rockburn Central Otago, taking its name from the rugged, rock-strewn, burn-scarred landscape of the region. With the increase in size, it was thought that the brand name would more truly reflect the terroir of the vineyards. Malcolm Rees-Francis joined Rockburn as the new Winemaker, having previously worked as assistant winemaker at Felton Road with Blair Walters. As the demand for their wine increased, both domestically and overseas, a new winery complex on Ripponvale Road in Cromwell was purchased in 2015.
Handpicked grapes from the Parkburn Vineyard in Lowburn and the Gibbston Valley Back Road Vineyard reflect the unique terroirs of Central Otago. The resulting wines clearly express the complex subtleties only available in New Zealand's one true continental climate.
