Vidal Estate Wines
The story of the Vidal Winery dates back to the early 1900’s. Anthony Vidal, a young Spaniard arrived in New Zealand in 1888. From 1888 until 1905, he worked together with his uncle, Joseph Soler, learning the crafts of viticulture and viniculture. In 1905, he purchased an old racing stable in Hawke's Bay, and converted it into a rudimentary cellar and vineyard. Shortly thereafter, Vidal found success with his patience and natural approach to winemaking, something that the company has followed through with until today.
Vidal was purchased by Villa Maria in 1976 and opened the first New Zealand winery based restaurant 3 years later. Today Vidal produced 5 ranges of wine, including the following varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot blends, and Syrah.
Hugh Crichton, Vidal’s chief winemaker, utilises the climate and terroir of the region to bring clarity and freshness to his wines, all while retaining the freshness and complexity inherent in the fruit. The resulting wines are wines that exhibit the qualities of their origins, not something that other wines can achieve on a regular basis.
