Hans Herzog Pinot Noir 2017
Hans Herzog Estate
Winemakers Vintage Report: The Herzog’s grow Pinot Noir since many centuries on the steep hills of the Rhine River in Switzerland. Pinot probably flows in Hans’ blood and with the experience of over 40 Pinot vintages the wine speaks for itself. 2014 was another great growing season rewarded our vineyard work with perfect physiologically ripe and healthy grapes. We picked the different clone’s end of March on the warmer sandy soils and beginning of April on the cooler clay soils of the house block; all at a tiny yield of 700g per vine.
Winemakers Comment: A long skin contact allowed to extract the vibrant flavours. The must then progressed naturally to a long wild yeast fermentation. After gently pressing, the wine was transferred into partly new French Barriques where it underwent a second natural malolactic fermentation and matured on its fine lees for a total of 18 months. Unfined & unfiltered to retain the great flavours.
Winemakers Tasting Notes: Elegant and understated in Hans’ traditional old world style. A food wine, less fruit driven than your typical New World Pinot. Exceptional depth, concentration and structure (natural high dry extracts) from its low yields. (No free run juice for concentration). Vibrant and alluring with notes of dark red fruits, dark chocolate and a deep earthy undertone held together by ripe tannins, fine acidity and minerality. This elegant wine will develop beautifully over many years.
