An idyllic island getaway from Auckland, being located just a 40 minute ferry ride away from the city, and home to many eccentric locals and winemakers, and even a colony of wild roosters! 

Waiheke Island specialises in robust reds; Bordeaux styles and Syrah. The island’s climate is warmer than Auckland, and is sheltered from climatic extremes as a result of the surrounding water, and this helps the wines ripen fully. Here, you will find New Zealand’s equivalent of Bordeaux’s 1st Growths, namely, Stonyridge Vineyard and Destiny Bay. But, there are also plenty of other enjoyable, more budget-friendly options on this gem of an island to suit your red wine needs.
