Te Motu Vineyard
The Dunleavy family purchased 30 acres of land in 1988 on Waiheke Island to plant premium vines. One year went by before the first vines were planted and the first vintage of Te Motu was made in 1993.
Nestled in the Onetangi Valley, which is commonly referred to as “vineyard valley,” the entire north-facing Te Motu estate is sheltered from strong winds, has Jurassic-era free-draining soils, and a spectacular micro-climate that is perfectly suited for Cabernet and Merlot.
Everything is done by an efficient and gentle hand with incredible attention to detail. So much so that Te Motu’s grapes are harvested and destemmed within 15 minutes! Te Motu wants their wines to speak to the terroir of their Onetangi Valley site.
Te Motu’s top wine, also called Te Motu, is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Te Motu Te Motu usually does not get released until it is five years old. Te Motu makes a Merlot-dominant red blend called Kokoro, as well as a very limited single-varietal wine made only when conditions are just right called Tipua.
A second range of wines made by Te Motu is Dunleavy. The Dunleavy wines are more approachable when released but are made with the same quality-focused hands. Under the Dunleavy range, Rosé, Syrah, Merlot, and a Cabernet/Merlot blend are available.
