Stonyridge Vineyard

One of the first to grow grapes on Waiheke Island and super high end producer, Stonyridge Vineyard is a world class Bordeaux-blend wine grower and producer. Stephen White started Stonyridge Vineyard in 1982 after yachting around the world and working at wineries in France, Tuscany, and California. Stonyridge Vineyard planted their first Bordeaux varietals in 1982 and also established the first commercial olive grove in New Zealand on Waiheke Island.

Stonyridge Vineyard acquired the final red Bordeaux grape, Petit Verdot, in 1984 and produced the first vintage of Stonyridge Vineyard wines in 1985. The flagship wine of Stonyridge Vineyard is Larose. This is a classical left-bank style and set the benchmark for all New Zealand Bordeaux blends with the 1987 Larose receiving national and international fame. By some accounts, the 1987 Larose is regarded as the greatest ever red wine made in New Zealand.

In addition to the top tier Larose, Stonyridge Vineyard also produces the little brother to Larose, Airfield, a Rhône-blend called Pilgrim, a single-varietal Malbec dubbed “Luna Negra,” and some Reserve and Estate-level whites: Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Furthermore, Stonyridge Vineyard as a sub-label called Fallen Angel that are wines that are not grown on Waiheke Island. Currently, these include a Fallen Angel Rosé and Fallen Angel Riesling from Marlborough, a Methode Traditionelle Sparkling Wine, Fallen Angel Chardonnay from Hawke’s Bay, and Fallen Angel Pinot Gris from Central Otago.

James Halliday has said that a Stonyridge Vineyard “vertical tasting did no more than confirm [his] view that Stephen White is making New Zealand’s finest Cabernet-based red wines.”
