Esk Valley Estate Wines
Esk Valley was originally a winery called Glenvale that was established in 1933 by Robert Bird, however, in 1986 the winery and land was purchased by Sir George Fistonich (founder of Villa Maria Wines). Glenvale had previously specialised in fortified wines such as port and sherry in style, but the now founded Esk Valley wanted to take a different direction, one towards high quality wines. Winemaker Gordon Russell first joined the team in 1993. Since then, Gordon has seriously elevated Esk Valley's status. Gordon aimed to produce premium hand-crafted wines that were both elegant, sophisticated and truly reflective the character of the individual vineyards. Today Esk Valley produces some of the finest reds in New Zealand, and in recent years has built a strong reputation for their unique white wines.
Esk Valley is fortunate to be based in the Hawke’s Bay region, where the warm maritime climate and gravel-based soils are ideal for the production of high quality reds and fuller bodied white wines. The grapes currently grown by Esk Valley include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Chardonnay, Verdelho and Pinot Gris. They also source Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir from the Marlborough region.
Esk Valley produces a diverse range of wines that include the styles of rich Chardonnays, elegant Syrah, textural Pinot Gris, and stunning Bordeaux Blends such as ‘The Terraces’ which comes from their famous Terraces vineyard. Another one to keep your eye out for is their 2020 Artisanal Chenin Blanc. This single vineyard wine located in Mangatahi uses two clones of Chenin Blanc (220 & 880) to achieve baked apple, citrus and honey characteristics; this is a dry style with a rich and full palate.
