Rippon Vineyard

Rippon is easily one the most picturesque vineyard in the world. Overlooking Lake Wanaka, with  views toward Mount Aspiring and the Southern Alps in the distance,  it adds to the sense of wonder you might expect from their wines.

The Rippon vineyard site has been in the Mills family for 4 generations.  Rolfe Mills and his wife, Lois, were among the original four vineyards planted in Central Otago in the mid to late 1970s. Nick Mills, their son, became the winemaker for Rippon in 2003.

Rippon farms biodynamically, taking great care to care for and nurture the land, using no pesticides and no irrigation. The idea is to create wines that are authentic and true to their ‘sense of place’. The majority of Rippon’s vines are ungrafted; they remain on their own original rootstocks, making them susceptible to vine diseases that grafted roots are immune to.

Rippon currently produce 6 varietal wines: Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Gamay, and Osteiner. To truly appreciate the stunning wines that are produced by Rippon, one simply needs to do a tasing of the ‘Emma’s Block’ Pinot Noir and the ‘Tinker’s Field’ Pinot Noir.  Both grown at the bottom of the vineyard, a stone’s throw away from Lake Wanaka and within 10 metres of each other, they are a stunning contrast in style. Emma’s Block is soft & elegant, feminine and ethereal. Tinker’s Field, on the other hand, is big, bold and structured.
