Obsidian Vineyard

Obsidian farms 10 hectares of grapes over four vineyards in an amphitheatre-shaped hillside. Originally planted in Onetangi Valley in 1993 with the aim of producing Bordeaux blends, however in 2004 Obsidian made their first non-Bordeaux blend, a merlot dominant Rosé. Now, Obsidian continues to produce Bordeaux blends, but also produces small quantities of quality-focused single-vineyard Syrah, Montepulciano, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Tempranillo. Obsidian was the first to grow montepulciano and tempranillo on Waiheke Island. Some chardonnay and pinot gris are brought in from elsewhere on Waiheke Island.

Obsidian has a simple vision to grow consistent, concentrated grapes and make them into great wines. In the vineyard, Obsidian keeps yields low in order to increase quality. By focusing on quality, but being mindful of price, Obsidian produces two levels of wines: estate and reserve.

Obsidian wines are excellent to pair with food and can be put in the cellar for years…if you can wait!
