Stonecroft Wines
Home of New Zealand’s oldest Syrah vines, Stonecroft is a small family owned winery that makes organic Gimblett Gravels wines in Hawke’s Bay. Established in 1982 by Dr. Alan and Glennice Limmer, it was one of the first vineyards in the area. As a result, the vines could take full advantage of the gravel soils which are composed of sand, silt and clay.
In 2010, Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin took ownership of the winery. Utilising two vineyards, Mere Road and Roy’s Hill, they produce four dark grape varieties (Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel) and three white varieties (Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Viognier). The total production is very small; average production is 2500 cases produced annually.
Owner and winemaker Dermot states that they seek to create wines that are intense, elegant & fruit-driven, but also capable of significant bottle development. Luckily for them, Roy’s Hill vineyard is known for contributing denser and more intense flavours. In addition to their standard range of Stonecroft wines, they produce the ‘Undressed’ Merlot and Syrah series where no sulphur is added during the winemaking process.
