Muddy Water Wines
Muddy Water Estate is the success story of Jane and Michael East, who started planting vines here after seeing its potential, in 1993. They experimented with many different varieties, trying to work out which would work best for Waipara’s climate. The East family retired in 2011, and passed the Muddy Water mantle to the Thomas family, who continue to lovingly craft terroir-specific Waipara wines.
Muddy Water is the translation of the Maori ‘Waipara’ describing the ancient sediment deposits and limestone-washed soils that are so characteristic here. These soils combined with the long dry gentle autumns, means nobody is in a rush to pick and they are able to create wines with intense flavour and charm.
Muddy Water was actually the first certified organic winery in Canterbury, and they are still keen on making hand-crafted boutique wines, wines that are minimal intervention (wild yeasts, no fining or filtration) that have soul and character. When you have great grapes, why mess with them?
