Coal Pit Vineyard

One of the very few single vineyards in the Gibbston sub-region of Central Otago, everything takes place on their beautiful 12 hectare site with a newly-built state-of-the-art winery. Headed by a female dominant team, owner Rosie Dunphy, and US expat winemaker Anika Willner, Coal Pit continues to deliver a solid portfolio of wines, made with 100% Gibbston fruit. Fresh, incredibly aromatic, and truly representative of the unique terroir offered by Gibbston.

They are situated on the historic Coal Pit Road, which in the early pioneering days was used to transport coal from the mines in the hills, down into the valley, and then on towards Lake Wakatipu, where it powered the steamboats taking goods from Kingston to Queenstown, and to transport sightseers to Glenorchy.

With a striking abstract label design from Chris Heaphy, the black lines on top and bottom represent the coal, whereas the red represents the recent Pinot Noir plantings that now dominate the landscape. It shows appreciation for the pioneering past, whilst also looking towards a promising future.
