Chard Farm Winery

Chard Farm winery is situated in an idyllic spot overlooking the Kawarau River; certainly one of most picturesque vineyards in the country. It was set up by local pioneer Rob Hay, with the help of his brother Greg, who later went on to set up Peregrine Wines and Wet Jacket Wines. In the pioneering days of establishing the Central Otago wine industry, Rob remembers overhearing a conversation around the time he purchased the land in Gibbston, that it ‘was a waste of bloody good merino sheep country’. This encapsulates just how crazy most people thought the early pioneers were, facing local resistance from people who claimed it  couldn’t, or shouldn’t be done.

Flash forward to the present day, and Chard Farm is a reputable winery, and one of many wineries in Gibbston producing stunning wines. Nowadays they have expanded their number of vineyards to four, and are also producing wines from the Cromwell basin.
