Burn Cottage Vineyard
Burn Cottage Vineyard is a 24-hectare estate in the foothills of the Pisa range in Central Otago, New Zealand. The vineyard was bought in 2002 by husband and wife Marquis and Dianne Sauvage. The couple contacted Ted Lemon, owner and winemaker at Littorai Wines in Sebastopol, California, USA, to seek his involvement in the project.
The addition of Ted to the team brought someone with the practical knowledge of terroir winegrowing based on many years of experience in Burgundy, California and Oregon. Burn Cottage believes in minimising sulphur usage and avoiding additives whenever possible. They also avoid the use of cultured yeasts, bacteria, associated nutrient products and filters and limit racking wherever possible but instead use lunar and celestial rhythms (Biodynamic). Along with vineyards, they have Highland cattle to supply manure for their compost programs along with olive trees to produce olive oil in the future.
In addition to Pinot Noir, Burn Cottage also produces a small amount of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Pinot Noir is planted on north, north-west facing slopes whereas Riesling and Grüner Veltliner on an east facing slope at the top of the property.
