It’s name is derived from the Latin word for gold, since it is inspired by the rich history of gold mining in Central Otago. Nowadays, however, the gold in this region is in a liquid form!
Located just outside Cromwell, in Lowburn, Aurum is a small family-owned enterprise, making exceptional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. The first vines were planted in 1997 by Joan and Tony Lawrence. In 2004, they were joined by their son, Brook, and his French born wife, Lucie, who met while working a vintage in Burgundy. Today Brook spends most of his time as the viticulturist and Lucie as the principal winemaker. Aurum is run organically and has BioGro organic certification.
Among the wines produced by Aurum are a few unexpected gems. Bucking the trend of using Pinot Noir for their Rosé, Lucie uses Pinot Gris to produce Aurum’s version of a Central Otago Rosé. And it’s not just the Rosé that is made with Pinot Gris, Lucie also makes an orange wine (white wine fermented on skins) called Aurum Amber and a white Port-style fortified wine called Port Molyneux. Aurum also has an olive grove planted with 3 Italian varieties of olives which they press and sell through their beautiful cellar door.
