Akitu
Andrew Donaldson, the founder of Akitu, is a Wanaka native. After spending the majority of his career in finance in the UK, he returned to Wanaka in 2000 and bought the 12 hectare site. Planted in 2002/2003 under the guidance of viticulturist Dr David Jordan, the vineyard consists of 6 clones of Pinot Noir. The vineyard is at 380 metres, an altitude which can be affected by frost in both the early and late parts of the season, but also allows for extended hang time producing fruit with both ripeness and acidity.
Andrew is a man of patience, waiting 10 years before producing his first vintage in 2012 and releasing it in 2014. Akitu remains dedicated to Pinot Noir and currently only produces 3 wines, Akitu A1 (black label), Akitu A2 (white label), and a very small release of Pinot Noir Blanc. Total production is currently 3000 cases per vintage. Akitu is a certified member of Sustainable Wineries NZ, operating under sustainable growing practices without the use of harmful chemicals or fertilizers.
