Pegasus Bay

Consistently viewed by wine critics worldwide as one of NZ’s most exciting producers, Pegasus Bay have been mastering wines in Waipara since the early 80s. It is owned and operated by the Donaldson family, husband and wife, Ivan and Christine, and their children all have key roles in the business, from winemaking to running the award-winning on-site restaurant.

Their secret to producing great wines is due to their old ungrafted vines planted in 1985, which produces ultra-low yields of highly concentrated fruit. Their vineyards also benefit from a sheltered climate due to the Southern Alps mountain range to the west, whilst the proximity to the sea to the east offers protection from frosts.  This results in a long growing season, ideal for grape ripening.

They are not afraid of pushing the boundaries with their winemaking, delivering some unique styles of wine, from complex late-harvest Rieslings to stunning Bordeaux blends like their “Maestro”.
