Mt Rosa Pinot Blanc 2025 is a single-vineyard white from one of the highest vineyards in Gibbston, Central Otago, with fleshy peach and brioche. It comes from a family-owned estate just up the road from our stores, and it is a great match for fresh oysters. This is a lovely wine for anyone who likes juicy whites with some texture.
In the glass it first reveals a touch of spice on the nose, then a vibrant, juicy palate.
This is a wine for those of us who enjoy a white with freshness and a little weight. A fantastic weekend wine.
The grapes come from Block 1 of Mt Rosa's vineyard on Gibbston Back Road, in the Gibbston Valley near Queenstown.
What it tastes like
This wine has a lovely balance of softness, verve and poise, as Mt Rosa describe it. Most of it was fermented in stainless steel to keep the fruit bright, while a small barrel-fermented portion adds a little extra texture. It's delicious.
Style at a glance
- Body: soft and juicy, with a little weight
- Acidity: fresh and lively
- Oak: 15% fermented in barrel and matured in French barriques, adding texture without masking the fruit
- Style: juicy, textural, fresh
Food to enjoy this with
- Fresh oysters
- Roast chicken
- Pan-fried fish
- Creamy risotto
- Salmon pâté on crackers
- Soft cheeses, Swiss cheese or Gouda
- Something unexpected: macaroni cheese. Mt Rosa suggest it themselves, and the wine's fresh acidity cuts through the creamy sauce while the brioche notes match the golden crust.
Who makes it
Mt Rosa is a family-owned and operated estate in the Gibbston Valley. Its single vineyard surrounds the cellar door on Gibbston Back Road, and every variety Mt Rosa makes is grown on site.
The vineyard is one of the highest in Gibbston, planted on rocky schist soils. Warm summer days and cool nights help the grapes keep their freshness, and the cooler evenings mean less disease pressure on the vines.
For the 2025 vintage, made by winemaker Dean Shaw, the grapes were picked on 25 April 2025 and whole-bunch pressed, which means the clusters went into the press without being crushed first, for a gentler juice. The juice was fermented with indigenous yeast (the natural yeasts from the vineyard), 85% in stainless steel and 15% in barrel. After a 6-week ferment, the wine was matured for 4 months in French barriques.
About the vintage
In her 2025 harvest report for Decanter, Emma Jenkins MW reported that spring frosts reduced yields in Central Otago and that the harvest was unusually compressed, at around half the usual span. Jen Parr of Valli was thrilled with the "tremendous concentration" in the fruit, particularly in Gibbston and Bendigo.
