Elspeth One is Mills Reef's flagship red, a Bordeaux-style blend from the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay. Expect blue and blackberry fruit, roasted plum and barrel spice, with real weight and a long finish. It's a wine built to cellar, though it's already drinking well.

The name says what it is: the one wine at the top of Mills Reef's range, made only in the years the Gimblett Gravels vineyards give them fruit good enough to justify it. This is a wine for a proper occasion, or for putting a few bottles away and watching what a decade in the cellar does to it.

Mills Reef built its reputation on Gimblett Gravels reds, and Elspeth One is the wine that reputation rests on. It sits above the single-variety Elspeth reds in the range, blended rather than varietal, aimed at the customer who wants power and structure rather than a lighter, earlier-drinking style.

What it tastes like

Blue and blackberry fruit leads, with roasted Doris plum sitting behind it. Barrel spice runs through the middle: clove and vanilla rather than raw oak. It's a bold, concentrated wine, dry and full-bodied, with dark berry fruit and spice carrying through a long finish.

This isn't a wine that hides its structure. The tannin is real and the fruit has the concentration to match it, which is exactly what a blend like this is built for.

Style at a glance

  • Body: Full
  • Sweetness: Dry
  • Tannin: Firm, built to soften with age
  • Oak: Barrel spice present through clove and vanilla character
  • Style: Bordeaux-style red blend, concentrated, built for the cellar

Food

This wants red meat with some fat and char to match its weight: a char-grilled ribeye, slow-braised lamb shoulder, or venison with a rich jus. Duck breast with a berry-based sauce plays to the fruit, and a mature hard cheese like aged cheddar or gouda works well once the wine has had a few years in the bottle. Worth trying against a mushroom and red wine risotto, where the earthiness gives the barrel spice something to sit against.

Who makes it

Mills Reef was started in 1989 by the Preston family and built its name on Gimblett Gravels reds, which is still where much of its reputation sits. Since 2020 Mills Reef has been part of The Wine Portfolio, an independent family-owned company whose winery and cellar door sit at Katikati, just outside Tauranga, on a site that's been making wine since 1978. Elspeth is the name on the top wines in the range, and Elspeth One is the flagship red that carries it, made only in years the Gimblett Gravels fruit is good enough to earn the name.

About the vintage

2021 was a smaller vintage nationally: New Zealand Winegrowers reported the harvest down 19% on 2020, the result of a cooler spring and late frost in some regions, and the industry called the resulting wines exceptional despite the reduced volume. Gimblett Gravels itself had a different story to tell. The district saw an unusually warm spring that brought on early flowering and an early start to harvest, with drier-than-average conditions through the season. Moderate summer temperatures kept the vines from any real stress, and settled weather held through picking, giving winemakers the flexibility to choose exactly when to bring the fruit in.

Writing for Vinography after tasting a wide selection of the district's 2021 reds, wine writer Alder Yarrow described the vintage as bright and fresh, with vibrant acidity, calling it a year red-wine drinkers who like their reds "bright and fresh" would enjoy. It's a different character to the warmer, more generous 2020 that preceded it, and both are genuine expressions of what Gimblett Gravels can do in different seasons.

When to drink it

Cameron Douglas MS, reviewing the 2021 in August 2025, put its drinking window at from the day of purchase through 2035 and beyond. That's a long window for a wine already four years old, and it reflects the structure a blend like this is built with. Open a bottle now if you want to see where it is today, or lay several down and enjoy the benefits of a decade or more in the cellar.
