Felton Road
The prestigious Felton Road Winery is one of the icons of Central Otago producers, and one of the legendary names in New Zealand wine. It dates back to 1991, when the first vines were planted along the company's namesake, Felton Road, in Bannockburn. Free-spirited and eccentric Nigel Greening has owned the company since 1998, with the aim of competing with California, Oregon and Burgundy’s Cote d’Or.
The wines are made by keen motorist turned fighter plane enthusiast, Blair Walter, who has been with the team since the 1997 vintage. They showcase strong ‘sense of place’, making single vineyard wines from their four separate vineyards; Calvert, the Elms, MacMuir, and Cornish Point. Not content with producing some of the region's best Pinots, they also make some wonderful Rieslings!
All of Felton Road’s vineyards are now biodynamically operated, and this is combined with Blair’s ‘hands-off’ winemaking approach, meaning wild yeasts, little to no enzyme additions, and no fining agents. These authentically produced wines are certainly ones that New Zealand should be proud of, and can easily hold their own on the world-stage.
