Destiny Bay
Destiny Bay was founded and planted on Waiheke Island by Michael and Ann Spratt in 2000 to exclusively produce Bordeaux-like wines that rival the greatest Bordeaux First Growths, Italian Super Tuscans, and cult-like Australian and American reds. Destiny Bay makes three red blends from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. Destiny Bay’s estate is shaped like a gently contoured amphitheatre, with vines sourced from noble vineyards all around the world.
The three red blends are all made from low-yielding vines, incredible attention to the grapes when picking and sorting, and an uncompromising approach on winemaking. Interestingly, all three red blends use all five red Bordeaux varietals and see similar amounts of new French and American oak for 10 to 15 months. The wines are then further bottle aged for 2 to 3 more years prior to release. All three levels of their wines are age-worthy and sought after by collectors all around the world.
Their wines are: Destinae, Mystae, and Magna Praemia. Destiny Bay’s flagship wine is Magna Praemia, which is modelled after left-bank Bordeaux. Magna Praemia is Cabernet Sauvignon dominant wine, and is incredibly well structured. Mystae is all five grapes blended together, but has a higher proportion of Merlot. The entry-level Destinae is a ‘right-bank’ Merlot-dominant blend, that's softer, and more approachable wine in its youth.
