Cloudy Bay Vineyard
Cloudy Bay was founded by David Hohnen, who studied winemaking and viticulture in California in the 1960s and established a small winery in Western Australia in the 1970s. Finally, in 1985, he founded Cloudy Bay. It was one of the first wineries in Marlborough and appropriately named after Captain James Cook’s 1770 observance of a flood that caused the bay to become clouded with sediment. Cloudy Bay was acquired by Veuve Cliquot in 2003 and now is part of the LVMH portfolio.
Iconically Marlborough, Cloudy Bay produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sparkling Wine from multiple different vineyards throughout the region. Farther south, in Central Otago, they grow Pinot Noir from three subregions (Bannockburn, Bendigo and Lowburn).
Encompassing 310 hectares of vineyards throughout Marlborough and Central Otago, Cloudy Bay wines are found in 30 countries all around the world. Cloudy Bay has completed more than 35 vintages. To no surprise, Cloudy Bay’s flagship wine is Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc!
