Ayrburn Ten Acre Pinot Noir 2024 is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Gibbston sub-region of Central Otago. The wine has savoury, herbal complexity with dark cherry and plum fruit, taut acidity and polished tannins. It suits anyone who wants a serious Pinot Noir to cellar, with a suggested drinking window of 2029 to 2038.
Pour a glass and the aromas come up savoury and herbal, with ripe red berries and an earthy, mineral scent. There is smoke and spice from the oak. The palate is taut and tense, with dark cherry and plum fruit held in place by fine acidity and tannins (the drying, gripping part of a red wine).
It is a wine for a slow dinner with good friends, or one to put away. The suggested drinking window is from 2029 to 2038, so put a bottle or two in the cellar as well.
Ten Acre is Ayrburn's single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Gibbston, the cool valley east of Queenstown.
What it tastes like
There is a very enticing bouquet of savoury complexity, dried herb and ripe red berries. Earthy mineral scents of marl and silty soil, are followed by smoke and spice from the oak.
The palate is taut, with tannins and acidity framing a core of red and black fruit: dark cherries, plums and some boysenberry, with more spice from the barrel. There is a backbone of acidity, polished tannins and a savoury, complex finish with wild dried thyme and lots of mouthfeel before the fruit returns.
Style at a glance
- Body: medium to full, with plenty of mouthfeel
- Sweetness: dry
- Tannin: polished, with a firm acid backbone

- Venison loin with a red wine jus
- Mushroom risotto or mushrooms on toast with thyme
- Slow-cooked lamb shoulder
- Roast pork belly
- Grilled salmon: the polished tannins are gentle enough for an oily fish

About the vintage
Stephen Wong MW's Central Otago 2024 report for The Real Review, published in January 2026, described early budburst, a dry summer and a cool March. The cool March meant a long hang time (the time grapes stay on the vine to ripen).
The report rated wines from Gibbston strongly, calling it a close contender for sub-region of the vintage.
When to drink it
Cameron Douglas MS suggests drinking it from 2029 through 2038.
