Ata Rangi

Ata Rangi was founded by Clive Paton in 1980 on the edge of Martinborough Village on the southern part of the North Island. Ata Rangi in Te Reo Māori means “dawn sky” or “new beginning” which is a very fitting name for a winery that embraces their ideology of creating wines to tell a story of their site. To this day, Ata Rangi remains family-owned, with a keen eye on producing high quality wines, especially Pinot Noir, from their Martinborough Terraces site.

Ata Rangi farms 14 vineyards totalling nearly 32 hectares surrounding the township of Martinborough. The home vineyards acquired full organic status in 2014. Ata Rangi is all about being good stewards of their land and they use the “waste” from making their wines as a compost to spread back into the vineyards.

There’s the story of the ‘Abel’ clone, which was named after the customs officer Malcolm Abel, who enabled its cultivation in NZ. It was allegedly from a stolen cutting of a single vine, from Domaine de la Romanee Conti in Burgundy, and hidden inside a gumboot.  This story is synonymous with Ata Rangi, which was the first to use it in their vineyards. In addition to Pinot Noir, Ata Rangi also produces a Red Blend, Syrah, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Riesling.
