The name ‘de la terre’ literally meaning ‘of the earth’, is a reference to both the vineyard soils and Hawke’s Bay’s only earth brick winery, de la terre. This small family-run business is owned and operated by Tony and Kaye Prichard. De la terre has a quirky mix of grape varieties which allows them to create a full range of wine styles. This includes styles such as Methode Traditionnelle Blanc de Blanc, simple and complex white wines, a selection of lesser known (in New Zealand) red grape varieties, through to a Sauternes-style Noble Viognier.
With over 30 years of winemaking experience, Tony produced his first vintage of de la terre in 2009. Their current two vineyards include Hill Country Estate and Cranwell located on the slopes of Te Mata Peak in Havelock North. From these vineyards they produce some incredible Tannat wines along with the classic Italian reds such as Barbera and Montepulciano. Their 2018 Montepulciano is dominated by dark fruit, black olive and cherry aromas as well as plum and vanilla oak notes. This puts a fun kiwi variation on the classic red Italian style.
